Awake Reading

At this very moment, I am sitting with our amazingly, awesome 2nd graders. They have just moved me to tears and I had to share.
We have been reading Patricia Polacco's Thank You, Mr. Falker. I am blown away by the thinking our class does while reading. They are deep thinkers and take care to reflect on both their words and feelings. So I challenge you to do some "Awake Reading" with your child this week. Here's what we've discussed so far:
Ask your child questions and discuss their mental images. I promise you won't regret it.

Then leave us a comment to tell us what you read and how it went (don't forget to leave your name)!

  1. I teared up listening to Lydia tell me about the story. I have never read the book and enjoyed listening to her tell me her interpretation of the story. She said it makes her angry that people are mean to Trisha because she can't read. She then told me of how she likes when her teachers help her and that she would have helped Trisha and been nice to her. I will implement this at home when we read. Its been a long time since I was in 2nd grade and I appreciate you both posting the curriculum so we can help our kids at home which in turn will help them succeed that much more at school.
